The clients brief for the alterations and additions to the family home were very specific. The old fau-Spanish villa style was to be re-interpreted into a more vernacular, 21st century design.
The Murgaroyd family do a lot of outdoor entertaining so a large, wrap-around timber deck and braai area was built as a focal point to the design. Baker and Partners were given the design and build contract and were encouraged to use as much ‘green’ technology as possible. The outside wall was stripped down to bare brickwork and left exposed. Recycled timber pallets were used in the decking and passive shading was achieved through a combination of chromo-deck roof sheeting, recycled shutter ply and timber louvres.
